Landlord ratings website provokes a response from the NLA

Responding to calls from Consumer Focus for the establishment of a ratings website of private landlords, David Salusbury, Chairman, National Landlords Association (NLA), said that while they recognise the need for accountability in the private rented sector, figures from Communities and Local Government show that the vast majority of landlords are already offering a professional service, with nearly 80% of tenants reporting a positive rental experience.

The NLA says it condemns the small minority of bad landlords who seek to exploit their tenants, but does not believe that an online ratings website is an effective way of raising standards in the private rented sector. In fact they believe that a ratings website could drive rogue landlords under the radar, whilst adding unnecessary burdens on the law abiding majority.

“Accreditation programs are the key to raising professional standards among landlords and enabling tenants to identify the better landlords. Local authorities also have a key role. They should leave the reputable majority of landlords alone and use their limited resources to tackle the rogues,” said Salusbury.
