£25m Quayside North development on the Isle of Man submits planning

A planning proposal for a £25m hotel, cinema and restaurant complex in the North Quay area of Douglas, Isle of Man has been submitted.

The mixed-use scheme by Kane Ltd will be built on the former Lord Street bus station site once planning has been given.

Mark Johnston, Senior Associate at Planning Consultants Peter Brett Associates LLP, who submitted the application on behalf of Kane Ltd, said: “We are delighted to help realise the potential of this long-awaited town centre development site, which will help to implement the vision of the Central Douglas Masterplan.

“The construction phase of the project is expected to support approximately 130 new jobs and once operational the project is expected to support 110 full time equivalent jobs. The project has policy support to bring increased activity to the leisure-based evening economy in this quayside area of Douglas.”

The proposed scheme will provide a new cinema complex with 7 screens, an 80-room hotel and 20 dwellings overlooking the quayside. In addition, at ground floor level, a mixture of new restaurants and retail units.

In addition, Kane has now exchanged contracts with leading anchor tenants, Travelodge Hotels and Omniplex Cinemas. The hotel and leisure operators have committed to the project long term via 25 and 20-year lease agreements, respectively.

Conor Bradley, Commercial Director at Kane Ltd, said: “Working alongside Aros Architects and supported by Deacon & Jones, we have developed a scheme of architectural significance. A scheme that we believe will truly transform Lower Douglas and develop into a real asset for the Island’s community and burgeoning economy.”

“We are fully committed to the Quayside North project, and looking forward to seeing the development finally come to fruition. As Island-based developers, we praise both the Government and the Regeneration Committee, for their proactive approach to regeneration, and town centre first planning policy.

Construction is scheduled to begin early in 2019 and will take two years to complete.
