First-time buyers will be forced out of Sydney says Minister

The Minister for Planning in New South Wales, Australia, Pru Goward, told attendees at an Urban Taskforce Industry Lunch held in Sydney this week that if something isn’t done the next generations, including her grandchildren, will not have options other than a ‘shoebox or moving out of Sydney altogether and Skyping mum.’

‘I don’t want to have to see them leave Sydney altogether because they’ve been priced out of the market,’ she said.

With 1.6m more people expecting to need housing across New South Wales in the next two decades, she said that infrastructure and creating housing are going to be the big focuses.

Goward pointed to part of the problem being a NIMBY attitude with many people not wanting apartment developments as well as little focus on ‘politically risky’ urban ‘infill’ (development) in the past, with both set to change under the new plan.
