Liverpool Waters receives Government go ahead

Peel's Liverpool Waters scheme has received official planning approval from Central Government paving the way for the redevelopment of the disused parts of the docks.

The Liverpool Waters project will see an investment of £6bn into the city of Liverpool and generate in excess of 15,000 new jobs over 60 hectares of predominantly derelict and underutilised docklands.

Ian Pollitt, development/investment surveyor for Peel, said: "After over five years working on this exciting and challenging project, today's decision by the Government to not call a public enquiry for the Liverpool Waters project is fantastic news for the future of Liverpool. This is another important step forward in the regeneration of Liverpool's already world famous waterfront."

The site, formerly known as Central Docks, will be transformed into a mixed-use development of residential, visitor attractions and supporting uses, office/commercial and local shops and services. It will accommodate city centre expansion and will further stimulate economic and social regeneration and integration with the adjoining areas of the city centre, north Liverpool and the wider sub-region.

Lindsey Ashworth, development director of Peel, said: "All cities in the UK have to compete with each other and each has to compete with rival European cities. Liverpool is now well placed to be alongside the best of the best.

"For Central Docks securing this planning permission is the end of the beginning and the start of another exciting phase of its life that will add to the beauty of Liverpool's Waterfront and the economic strength of the Liverpool region.

"Peel is proud to be in partnership with Liverpool - it's a great and exciting future for both".

The Liverpool Waters project occupies some 60 hectares of land to the north of Liverpool's Pier Head, and extends from Princes Dock to the south and to Bramley Moore dock to the north. The site extends 2km along the waterfront and also includes the King Edward Industrial Estate. It extends eastwards as far as the dock boundary wall that runs along Bath Street and Waterloo Road.
