Foreign tourists flock to Spain in record numbers

The Spanish tourism industry appears to be benefiting from the continued troubles in Turkey and Egypt, with a record-breaking 21m international tourists, (including almost 5m British and 3.5m Germans), arriving in Spain between January and May this year. This is an increase of 8.2% compared with the same period in 2013.

Figures released this week by Spain’s Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism has revealed that the huge rise in the number of people visiting Spain continues unabated. According to the Frontur survey, 6.8m tourists flocked to Spain in May alone.

The unprecedented boom in the sector shows no sign of slowing as 6.9% more Brits, 8.1% more Germans and 11.1% more French people visited than in the first five months of 2013.

Spain’s Canary Islands experienced the biggest surge in incoming tourist traffic with a year-on-year rise of 13.1%, followed by Andalucia with a 10.1% rise.

Just over one-third of visitors (7m+) did not stay in a hotel, which is good news for Spanish holiday home owners.
